Choosing the Japan-Made Cowhide no28 and no31
At LEVANO, only 2 models are a perfect fit for golf: the Japan-made cowhide no28 and no31 with their 5cm lift. Here we cover how to think about height, how to choose between the 2 pairs, how to pair them with separate clubhouse shoes, and how to pick your size.
“I want to wear elevator shoes for golf too, but can I really walk all 18 holes, and will I be able to plant my feet on a slope?” If that sounds like you, this article sorts out which models work for golf and what to watch out for when using them.
To get straight to the point: the only LEVANO models rated “◎” for golf are the 5.0cm UP Cowhide Leather Golf Sneakers no28 and the 5.0cm UP Cowhide Leather Golf Sneakers no31 (LEVANO rates each product’s suitability for each occasion on a 4-level scale: ◎ ideal / ○ suitable / △ usable but another model is recommended / × not suitable). Both are Japan-made with a cowhide upper and a 5cm lift; the differences are weight (460g versus 340g), size range and price, plus how well they suit everyday wear and business. Many sneakers (such as no05 / no13 / no37) are “△” for golf (no01 and no08 are “×”), and dress shoes, loafers, sandals and boots are all “×”. Below we explain why it is only these 2 models, how to choose between the 2 pairs, and then walk through dress codes and the steps for picking your size.

POINT 01
3 Things to Know Before Using Elevator Shoes for Golf
Golf puts a completely different load on your feet than walking on paved city streets. Keep the following 3 points in mind and you will not choose wrong.
1. The distance you walk in 1 round is close to 1 full day of walking around town
Walking all 18 holes on a typical course is said to add up to roughly 8 to 10km. Even with a cart, you still walk several km once you count the moves around the greens. Elevator shoes for golf therefore need to be at least as easy to walk in as a model rated “◎ for all-day walking around town.” Both no28 and no31 are ◎ for all-day walking, so they meet this condition.
2. On slopes, height translates directly into instability
Fairway slopes, bunker lips, the ups and downs around the greens: on a golf course, your soles end up at an angle again and again. The general thinking is that with elevator shoes, which gain their height from an internal insole structure, the higher the lift, the higher your center of gravity, and the more it affects your footing on a sloping lie. The only LEVANO models rated ◎ for golf are the 5cm no28 and no31 that were designed with rounds in mind. At the same 5cm, the everyday-oriented no05 and no13 are △, most 6cm and 7cm sneakers are also △, and no01 and the high-top no08 are rated ×.
3. Prioritize “lightness” and “a sneaker shape” over “height”
In golf, your satisfaction depends less on a 1cm difference in height than on whether you can wear the shoes for 1 full day without getting tired. no31 weighs 340g and no28 460g. The 2 pairs both have a sneaker-type silhouette, designed so they do not read as a platform even with golf pants. The criteria for a less tiring pair are also laid out in “Are Elevator Shoes Hard to Walk In? How to Choose a Comfortable Pair.”
POINT 02
Only 2 Elevator Shoe Models Add Height on the Golf Course: no28 and no31
Of LEVANO’s entire lineup, no28 and no31 are the only models that work as golf shoes (rated ◎ for golf). What they share: “Japan-made, cowhide upper, 5cm lift, sneaker type.” Where they differ: weight, size range, price, and how they rate for occasions other than golf.
Spec Comparison: Japan-Made Golf Sneakers no28 and no31
Both are ◎ for golf and ◎ for all-day walking, so there is no difference in how well they work on the course. Where they differ is weight, the top of the size range, price, and how you will wear them on non-golf days.
Choose no28 if: you want to keep the price down and also wear them as weekend sneakers
At ¥22,860 (tax included), no28 is the more affordable of the 2 golf-◎ models. It is ◎ for everyday wear, so you can wear it as a weekend sneaker on non-golf days too. Sizes run 24.0 to 26.5cm, and it weighs 460g. It is △ for business, so at courses where you enter the clubhouse in a jacket, bring a separate pair of dress shoes.
Choose no31 if: you want the lightest possible pair that stays comfortable on a walking round
At 340g, no31 is built 120g lighter than the no28 model. It suits golfers who mostly walk their rounds, or who want to take the same shoes on golf trips. Sizes run from 24.0 to 27.0cm. The price is ¥30,480 (tax included).
Can’t decide? Go by your foot size and “whether you’ll wear them off the course”
The simplest rule: if you need 27.0cm, go for no31; if you take 26.5cm or under and will wear them often for everyday use, go for no28 instead. There is no need to agonize over “which one is less noticeable.” The differences in how the Japan-made series is built are covered in detail in “Japan-Made Elevator Shoes as an Option: How the Cowhide no28 to no31 Are Made and What Sets Them Apart.”
POINT 03
Can the Golf-△ Elevator Sneakers (no05 / no13 / no37) Be Used for a Round?
△ means “usable, but another model is recommended,” which we distinguish from × (not suitable). It mainly applies to the Korean-made synthetic leather sneakers; the 3 most representative models are summarized in the table below.
Main Elevator Sneakers Rated △ for Golf
Even a △ model is fine for hitting a few dozen balls from a flat bay at the driving range. A round on the course, however, combines slopes, turf and long-distance walking, so if you are buying a new pair specifically for golf, go straight for the ◎-rated no28 or no31 from the start.
If you already own no05 or no13 and want to “get a feel for them at the range first,” that is a realistic way to use them. However, with a 7cm model like no37 the higher center of gravity is more noticeable on slopes, so we especially do not recommend it for a round. You can compare the differences by height in the elevator sneakers lineup.
Note that dress shoes, loafers, sandals and boots are all × for golf. Even within the same Japan-made series, the Cowhide Leather Casual Shoes no29 are × for golf and not suited to a round (we cover them as a candidate for arrival shoes in POINT 04).
POINT 04
Golf Course Dress Codes, and Pairing Elevator Shoes with Clubhouse Shoes
Many golf courses have a dress code for arrival and for inside the clubhouse; typical examples are a jacket requirement and a rule specifying dress shoes or loafers. It is easiest to think in terms of 2 pairs: 1 for the round and 1 for arrival and the clubhouse.
On arrival: bring a separate pair of dress shoes or loafers for the clubhouse
no28 is △ for business and no31 is ×. At courses where you arrive in a jacket, the safe approach is to bring a separate pair of dress shoes or loafers for the clubhouse and change at your locker. If you want your added height to stay the same all day, choose your arrival shoes from the 5cm UP elevator shoes too. With the 5.0cm UP Cowhide Leather Casual Shoes no29 (◎ for business) from the same Japan-made series, your eye level does not change when you switch to or from the no28 or no31 for the round. no29 itself is × for golf, so do not use it for the round.
During the round: check each course’s shoe rules in advance
Rules on sole specifications (the type of spikes, and whether spikeless shoes are allowed) vary from course to course. If you would like to check the sole specs of no28 and no31 against your course’s rules, please ask us on LINE before you buy. The surest way to confirm the course’s own rules is to ask the golf course when you book.
Clothing: let the hem of your golf pants rest lightly on the top of the shoe
If the hem is too short, the full height of the shoe is on view and it is more likely to look like a platform. With golf pants too, if the hem just touches the top of the shoe, even a 5cm lift is unlikely to look out of place. How to set the hem length is explained in “What Trouser Length Works with Elevator Shoes? The Right Hem Length and Silhouette.”
POINT 05
Sizing Elevator Shoes for Golf, and Breaking Them In at the Range
The basic rule for sizing is to choose the same size as the sneakers you usually wear. Because the height comes from an internal insole structure, you can judge length and width just as you would with ordinary sneakers. The full reasoning is explained in “Elevator Shoe Sizing: Why Your Usual Sneaker Size Is the Right Choice.” There are 3 points specific to golf.
1. Check the size range first (no28 goes up to 26.5cm, no31 up to 27.0cm)
no28 runs 24.0 to 26.5cm and no31 24.0 to 27.0cm. If you take 27.0cm, no31 is the one to choose. If you take 27.5cm or larger, no golf-◎ model is currently available in your size. no05 (23.0 to 28.0cm) and no13 (25.0 to 28.0cm) do come in your size, but please decide with the understanding that they are rated △ for golf.
2. Try them on indoors wearing your golf socks
When they arrive, try them on indoors wearing the thick socks you will actually wear for a round. If the size does not fit, you can exchange it once within 7 days of delivery (return shipping is paid by the customer; we cover the shipping of the replacement pair). Only unused pairs tried on indoors are eligible; leave the product labels and accessories attached and include the delivery note. “TryBee,” which lets you try them on for 7 days for ¥0 before you buy, is also available from the product page.
3. Break them in at the range or on a walk before your first round
Once your size is settled, spend 1 to 2 hours walking at the range or around your neighborhood to get a feel for them. The higher heel slightly changes your stride and how your foot lands, so getting used to them on flat ground before heading out to a sloping course also makes it easier to keep your balance during the swing. Tips for a natural walk are collected in “How to Walk in Elevator Shoes Without Being Noticed: Tips and Practice.”
POINT 06
Caring for the Cowhide After a Round, and Wearing Them on Non-Golf Days
Both no28 and no31 have a cowhide upper. After a round, brush off any grass and soil, wipe them with a dry cloth, and let them dry somewhere well ventilated. Just 2 rules are enough: do not leave them wet in your shoe bag, and do not force-dry them in direct sunlight or with a hair dryer. The cowhide care routine is laid out in “How to Clean and Care for Elevator Shoes | Tips to Make Synthetic Leather, Suede and Cowhide Last.”
On non-golf days, no28 is ◎ for everyday wear and no31 is ○. An easy way to decide: no28 if you will often wear them as weekend sneakers, the lighter no31 if golf, travel and walking around town are your main uses. Both are ○ for dates, so for a meal on the way home from golf you will not need to change shoes.
These 2 pairs are both part of the Japan-made elevator shoes series. When you consider that 1 pair covers both golf and everyday wear, the price gap over the Korean-made models becomes easier to accept.
FAQ
Elevator Shoes for Golf: Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Are there 6cm or 7cm elevator shoes for golf?
No. In the LEVANO lineup, only the 5cm-lift no28 and no31 are ◎ for golf. Most 6cm and 7cm sneakers (no02 and no37 among them) are △ for golf: usable, but we recommend another model (the 5cm no01 and the 6cm no08 are ×).
Q. Will my playing partners or the caddie notice they are elevator shoes?
no28 and no31 are sneaker-type models with a silhouette that does not read as a platform from the outside. What gives elevator shoes away is less the shape of the shoe than things like a hem that is too short or an awkward walk, so getting your pants length and your walk right matters more. The causes are explained in detail in “Do Elevator Shoes Look Obvious? 5 Causes and How to Choose a Discreet Pair | Picks by Occasion.”
Q. Do they have spikes? Can I use them at a course that requires spikeless shoes?
For sole specifications (including whether they have spikes), please ask us on LINE before you buy. Some courses have rules about soles, so also check the golf course’s rules when you book.
Q. If I wear them for a round and the size turns out to be wrong, can I exchange them?
No. Size exchanges are only for unused pairs tried on indoors: if the size does not fit, you can exchange it once within 7 days of delivery (return shipping is paid by the customer; we cover the shipping of the replacement pair). When they arrive, first try them on indoors with your golf socks, confirm the size, and only then start wearing them outside.

They differ in weight (460g versus 340g), size range (up to 26.5cm versus up to 27.0cm) and price (¥22,860 and ¥30,480 respectively, both tax included), plus how they rate for everyday wear and business; on the course itself there is no difference.
